If you've been following along with Ship John for any amount of time, you might have noticed a slight obsession with a little classic cutting knife of yore... The 299. The love for this little knife was born of necessity first and then a realization that it was the perfect knife for getting precise cuts on leather... Almost. While the 299 holds the blade more firmly than virtually any other cutting knife past or present, it left a little to be desired in the grip department. In holding the knife like a pencil (which we do for precise cuts) the baseball bat shape lets it rotate in the pit of your thumb and pointer finger. We aimed to address this grip issue, re-situate the blade to account for the modern length and rethink the overall feel of a classic.

We present to you the Ship John SJSN4 Cutter. Expertly machined from a block of 7075 Aluminum in Osaka, Japan by a second generation owned machine shop started by our dear buddy Sonny's father, Okamoto. Now operated by Sonny's brother and his son. This is one of the most capable machine shops I have ever seen... Making everything from highly important airplane parts to engine cylinders for container ships and... now... our beautiful knives.

This knife is NO JOKE. My 2d designs and ideas were tweaked and morphed into a dimensional object by our talented friend Jim M. The angles were borrowed from the faceted idea of grip used in classic Scandinavian carving tools. The large angles nestle the knife in the aforementioned crook of your hand leaving the knife in a natural upright position for maximum control of precise cuts. The 7075 aluminum body, while lighter than the brass and copper versions, still lends heft to your cut reducing the need for downward pressure and, thus, hand fatigue. This one being a bit more totable than the heavy brass and copper. Let the knife do the cutting.
